What does CNC routing entail? As with other CNC machines, CNC routers are extremely effective in creating precision cuts into materials such as plastic and wood, and can be used for producing prototypes, signage, engineering parts and much more.

It works in a similar way to a standard, handheld router but with the ability to use computer numerical control to route different tool paths. This reduces the amount of waste produced, increases productivity and ensures a quicker turnaround time than handheld machinery. CNC routing is the perfect method for manufacturing flat panel-type components where a profile, simple or complex, is required. Routing is often also the initial step in the manufacturing process for other fabrications too – it’s a cutting process that can be used for virtually any rigid plastic, as well as non-ferrous metals and wood.

CNC routing is an incredibly versatile method for cutting plastics and has many advantages over other profiling machines such as water jet cutters. This method of routing provides a cleaner cut and more professional finish, as well as leave fewer cut lines and machining marks, so minimal finishing is required afterwards, if any at all.
